Negotiations for a new agreement are due to start by August 2018. The agreement was signed in 2000 and expires at the end of 2020. The Cotonou Agreement is the backbone of the partnership between the EU, EU countries and 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. A Communication on a renewed post-2020 partnership was adopted in 2016. It started in 2018 with a view to a new agreement between the EU and ACP countries, which will replace Partnership Agreement 2000/483/EC. The agreement provides for cooperation activities for promotion: these activities are financed by the European Development Fund.
